Understanding the Differences Between ATY, DTY, FDY, and POY Yarn

2023-04-14 | Textile Fabric Knowledge

When it comes to yarn, you may hear terms like ATY, DTY, FDY, and POY. These terms represent different types of yarn, each with its own characteristics and uses. In this article, we will explore the differences between these four types of yarn.

ATY (Air Textured Yarn)

ATY, also known as air-jet textured yarn, is a special type of yarn used in textile processing. This yarn uses a special spinning technique to twist two or more yarns together, then uses high-speed air jets to add twist and deform the yarn, creating a texture similar to natural fibers.

ATY yarn has rich surface texture and a soft feel, and can be used to produce various fabrics such as sweaters, coats, curtains, and bedding. In addition, because ATY yarn has the characteristics of air-jet twisting, it has excellent elasticity and wrinkle resistance.

DTY (Drawn Textured Yarn)

DTY is another special type of yarn that is made by melting polyester chips in the manufacturing process, then extruding the liquid polyester through a die to form fine filaments. These filaments are then heated and stretched at high temperatures, creating a yarn with high elasticity.

DTY yarn has a smooth surface and a soft feel, while also having excellent stretch and elasticity. This makes it an ideal material for producing a variety of clothing and home textile products.

FDY (Fully Drawn Yarn)

FDY is a fully stretched yarn that is manufactured using a process similar to DTY. However, FDY is stretched to a greater degree, resulting in maximum elasticity and stretch performance.

FDY yarn has a smooth surface and a soft feel, while also having excellent abrasion resistance and strength. Because of its high stretch and elasticity, FDY yarn is typically used to produce various sportswear and high-strength fabrics.

POY (Partially Oriented Yarn)

POY is a partially oriented yarn that is manufactured by melting polyester chips, then spraying the liquid polyester into fine filaments, and finally partially orienting the filaments by heating and cooling them.

POY yarn has a smooth surface and a soft feel, and is typically used to produce various high-end fabrics such as sports and lingerie. POY yarn has good dyeing and processability, making it a preferred material for many fabric manufacturers.

In summary, ATY, DTY, FDY, and POY are four different types of yarn, each with its own characteristics and uses. ATY yarn has rich surface texture and a soft feel, DTY yarn has high stretch and elasticity, FDY yarn has high strength and abrasion resistance, and POY yarn has good dyeing and processability. Understanding the different types of yarn and their characteristics and uses can help us better choose the fabric material that meets our needs and improve production efficiency and quality.
